Annabel Johnson DipCeramics
For the last 2 years I’ve been studying for my Foundation Diploma in Ceramics at West Dean College
West Dean College is set in beautiful, inspirational parkland with exquisite gardens. It also houses the extensive collection of Surrealist art left by the college founder Edward James
It’s been the most incredible journey in the most inspiring of places guided by a wonderful tutor Tanya Gomez
The residential aspect of this course provided me with space and dedicated time to immerse myself in this learning journey with three, four day units each year.
We covered all aspects of ceramics from hand building to throwing and joining larger pieces, making our own glazes, alternative firing techniques and experimentation with surface decoration and a variety of different clay bodies.
It has been a privilege getting to know this fantastic and inspirational group of ceramicists over the last two years. We have supported and learnt from each other hugely throughout this journey. Our final project work is currently on show at West Dean College (June 2025). It has been amazing to see how differently we are all working and how each piece reflects its maker.
