New Work - Wimbledon Art Trail 2026
I’m busy preparing to show my latest collection of work as part of Wimbledon Art Trail 2026 organised by Common Works Gallery
Over the last year I have developed two bodies of work responding to significant aspects of my life that I will show as part of the event at my home and studio.
The Lamorna collection expresses my love of the outdoors and exploration of remote coastal locations, with the freedom and exhilaration this brings.
The Modern Maiollica work is research based work following a deep dive into Italian maiolica ceramics as part of my work as an artist educator and art historian.
Lamorna Collection
Inspired by experiences walking and swimming in remote coastal locations I capture feelings of walking in wind and rain, the sense of discovery while scrambling, paddling and swimming around rocks and pools and looking at the coast from the sea. The work captures escape and freedom from the everyday. I want to contain these feelings in objects that can be brought inside and used for reflection and rejuvenation.
Modern Maiolica
This collection of maiolica-ware designs are my response to the patterns and colours noticed on renaissance maiolica-ware across museum collections in London.
I enjoy the qualities of oxides and stains painted onto pre-fired, tin white glaze on a red earthenware body. I enjoy the serendipitous bleeding of colours that occurs through the glazing process and the almost metallic finish with the red earthenware clay body peeping through.
Walking in the Rain
While working with young people and museum ceramics collections I researched the historical maiolica technique of painting onto red earthenware clay, coated with a tin white glaze using stains and oxides (see above). I developed this technique to capture my own response to the world - replicating what we often ask young people to do when making art as a way of informing my own work and to understand how young people might be feeling when I work with them to develop their own ceramic projects.
These designs bring both bodies of work together using historical techniques to capture experiences of walking by the coast in wind and rain.
Designs were initially generated through small paintings made quickly to capture fleeting feelings of exhilarating - moments that pass all too quickly.
